About me

Me at the rooftop of the Parque Central Hotel in Havana

Hi there, my name is Armando Rivero Piñero. I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1988. I got a bachelor degree from Havana University in Physics and worked for a couple of years as a scientist, mostly MRI technology, data analysis and applied Math to Neuroscience. Then I burned out, decided to quit and fell in love with programming.

I became a senior backend engineer through self-study and work experience (no formal training). I have more experience with Python’s and PHP’s ecosystems but really love learning and trying anything with programming and computers. I’m more of a logical/analytical person, so GUIs are not my stronger suit, that’s why I prefer the backend over the frontend.

Although I’m not a big expert, I also enjoy the operational side of software. Configuring servers from scratch with firewalls, fail2ban, web servers, installing packages and make things work to deploy sites and see them run, it’s a very rewarding experience to me. I prefer Linux for everything, Manjaro in my laptop and Ubuntu or Debian in the servers. I find Docker very handy to simplify complex setups.

I’m a generalist thinker, which means I’m curious to learn the biggest ideas from every domain, specially science and technology, even though I only want to go deep into a few domains.
